Key Accounts Manager Nelson/Marlborough
- Tell us a bit about Giesen Estate Wines.
In Christchurch in 1979 after a period of travelling from their native Germany, Alex & Theo Giesen saw an opportunity after a visit to a local bottle store. The two brothers bought some land, planted some vines and then convinced Marcel to study winemaking back in Germany. Producing their first vintage in 1984, which included a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the business now owns 13 vineyards, covering 284 hectares located throughout the Wairau valley. These vineyards and partnerships with 70 growers allow the company to craft different styles and varietals of wines including the Estate and The Brothers range, The August Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc and a range of single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs . Giesen wines now export to over 30 countries globally. Wine lovers all over the world enjoy Giesen
- How has Giesen been involved in sponsoring the Waikawa Boating Club?
We are always proud to be involved in sponsoring the Waikawa Boating Club with primary sponsorship of the Learn to Sail events, Christmas raffle prizes and help with the calendar and handbook.
- Why do you sponsor the WBC?
It’s the hub of the gateway to the sounds, the people associated are all likeminded and love the lifestyle that we do! Boating, relaxing, fishing, wine, food, family, friends.
- What is the best part of living/working in Marlborough?
The community vibe and the treasures that come from the region, I’m obsessed with all of the local produce, fresh seafood and beautiful wines the region has to offer.
- What is the best part of working at Giesen?
The people I meet in my role. The new slogan for us really says it all, great people great wine, great times.
- What’s new for Giesen?
We are constantly evolving as a business. Around the globe consumers are experimenting with wines more and always looking for something different. Our Sauvignon Blanc portfolio is a great example, just 5 years ago we had two Sauvignon Blanc styles, today we have a diverse range which includes organic, barrel fermented, single vineyard, low alcohol and late harvest wines. Perhaps the area that has had a fair amount of focus is our Organic/premium vineyards programme, with this we have 20% of our company vineyards either certified organic or under transition, this includes our newly acquired Clayvin vineyard, a 20 year old hillside vineyard in the Southern valleys that continues to produce stand out wines
- What are you most excited about right now?
Springtime is just around the corner! New vintage release wines, people come out of hibernation, more community events, bbqs, evening walks and day light savings!
- What would you tell people thinking of moving/visiting Marlborough?
You can have it all! Such a beautifully balanced lifestyle
