2017 WineWorks Marlborough Wine Race – Friday 1st December 2017
The WineWorks Marlborough Wine Race trophy was contested on October 14th 2016 when yachties raced across the Cook Straight in a battle to land our new release Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on our capital’s shores. In conjunction with the handicap trophy mentioned above, Wine Marlborough, sponsored a trophy for the yacht that took out line honours. This years race will be held on Friday 1 December 2017.
Since the race began in 2001, it has not only grown in size but vigour. In 2016, 45 yachts and 260 sailors raced across our most famous piece of water to Wellington and organisers are hoping to have even more entries for the 2017 race. The race is organised by the Waikawa Boating Club. Yachts require a Category 3 safety certificate to be eligible to enter. Yachts and crews wanting to register to take part in the race can email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
This event has become a highlight on the New Zealand Offshore race calendar and the two significant developments to the 2017 event will see potential for even more wineries to enter more labels, with any varietal now able to be entered.
The second exciting addition is the introduction of the Wine Marlborough Twilight Series, raced over three Friday evenings prior to the race and starting on October 20th. With such a range of Marlborough wines entered Wine Marlborough will host special wine tastings post race at the Club showcasing each of the wineries entries.
