Mooring Updates

Approaching & Departing Moorings

Please plan your approach and departure from moorings. Each time a mooring is broken it costs the club $1,000!
Arriving
  • before you set up to grab the mooring check the wind direction and current
  • approach the mooring from the leeward side so you don’t get blown or washed over the mooring
  • have someone on the bow pointing and communicating with the helm
  • approaching slower is better than faster; mistakes are easier to adjust for if they unfold slowly!
  • if you miss, go around and try again, and again, if necessary
Departing
  • start the engine before letting go of the mooring
  • drift off or reverse off the mooring until well clear
  • then move slowly forward, turning away from the mooring
  • don’t turn too quickly or the stern could swing around and run over the mooring

There are rules in using the moorings

While Club members pay for the right to use the moorings as part of their annual subscription fees, there are rules that attach to these rights that must be adhered to by all members. Further to this there are rules associated with the Outward Bound NZ moorings.

Moorings to avoid

Kauauroa Bay #3156 appears to have been dragged – USE WITH CAUTION

Camp Bay #2 boats are getting tangled in ropes from other buoys – AVOID

Pohuenui #1788 has a temporary buoy DO NOT USE

Tawa Bay #2470 rope is damaged – DO NOT USE

Coopers North #5 has a temporary float awaiting repair – DO NOT USE

Wharehunga has a temporary buoy fitted – DO NOT USE; it will not hold a boat. We’ll update when it’s fixed.

Moorings with special conditions

Annie Bay – Pelorus Sound requires permission to access Forsyth Island as this is Private Land. Please call the land owners, Brent & Gina on +64 3 579 8018 or 021 704 457 before your trip or call into Sunday Bay (wharf) and knock on the door.

Whareatea Bay has a Club mooring but remember that the land surrounding this is PRIVATE PROPERTY, so please don’t land without prior permission.

UPGRADED Mooring

Kaipakirikiri #233 now has a new 4t block and can take up to 5 boats

Ketu Snug Cove West #780 has a new buoy fitted – GOOD TO USE

Raetihi #785 has a new float – GOOD TO USE

NEW Mooring

Duncan Bay #533 Green Pole, Waitata Reach. Write this one down on your moorings map until we get a future reprint.

This mooring is number 533 green pole.
Coordinates 41.06.758 S   173.45.854 E.
Good in most winds except Southerly.

There is a boat ramp (and toilets) on the nearby shore, a wharf (with cold water hose) and the Duncan Bay to Kaiumu Bay track next to the wharf. Just North from the mooring (and accessible along the DB-Kaiumu track) is Pippi Beach which is good for swimming.

The river running into the bay is good for kids swimming and there is a common green area next to the river – picnic area for use by everyone. There is also a defibrillator available in the bay.
