Learn to Sail

Thursdays 3 February-17 March

CANCELLED due to Covid-19

Get aboard a yacht, with an experienced skipper and head out into the gorgeous Queen Charlotte Sound for a few hours each Thursday. On the water, or in the clubhouse if the weather is a bit ugly, you’ll learn the fundamentals of sailing. The seven week program will finish with a fun race between the participating crews.

The topics covered include:

  • Safety
  • VHF radio
  • Weather
  • Knots & Winches
  • Parts of the boat
  • Points of sail
  • Motor use
  • Sails
  • Rules
  • Navigation
  • Man Over Board (MOB)

You’ll also receive:

  • Crew Membership of Waikawa Boating Club entitling you to many of the club benefits (normally $85)
    • Beverage discounts
    • Coastguard course discounts
    • Club partner offers
    • Social events
    • Affiliation to Yachting NZ and Clubs of NZ
    • Access to the club, FREE parking and WiFi
  • A voucher for a FREE drink at the club bar
  • Seven evenings on the water (subject to weather)

What will you need:

  • Ideally your own lifejacket but don’t rush out and buy one; your boat will have one
  • Wet weather jacket. Waterproof! Not a puffer coat
  • Ideally white soled, non slip, non marking shoes. No heels!
  • No cotton or jeans – wear wool, nylons
  • Drink bottle
  • After week one you’ll learn what the skipper likes to do post sailing and you might want to contribute to those drinks and nibbles in the coming weeks
