Race results – Torrent Bay Results 2023
With a midday start and the fleet lining up to below 10knots of North West, it wasn’t long before the wind built to 14knots, the fleet split at Cape Jackson which saw Astruso, Celebrity and Cisco head out into the straits looking for the allusive tidal push, Flying Fox tacked and headed inshore to Titi Island looking for flat water, whilst Asrtruso, Celebrity and Cisco disappeared over the horizon on there way to Kapiti Island, Flying fox sailed on their own close in, right up in the Lee of Stephens, Flying Fox rounded Stephens just as the sun was setting, with the other three boats still 2 – 3 miles out to sea.
Four whales graced us with the presence at the top of Stephens as we settled in for the 46 nautical mile drag race to Torrent Bay, the wind built to over 20knots and a short steep tidal influenced sea saw us close hauled, throwing water over the top for several hours, the wind began to ease and moved around to the north, had us beam reaching in a moon lite night at 8Knts, just as in the brochure. Around 1am Flying Fox sailed into the rain and drying wind about 2miles from torrent bay, finally parking half a mile from the finish line, looking over our should we to see their navigation lights looming closer and the fear of the fleet sailing up to park next to us. A three knot land breeze filled in around 2am to get us to the finish line, we had finish at 02:27am, first over the line and a new race recorded beating the previous record by five and half hours set by us in 2017. Astruso came in an hour behind, with Celebrity and Cisco battling it out for the wooden spoon and hour behind Astruso.
The Burnsco sponsored Prizing was had on the boats on Saturday afternoon, the boats made there way back to the Queen Charlotte Sound throughout the night to make the tide at French pass.
Torrent Bay Race NOR and Aggreement to be confirmed
Here are a couple of reviews from the 2021 event and Tarakohe Results 2021. Note that any boat that took more than 24 hours will have an odd looking time. e.g. 1:15:22. Add 24 to this and they had a time of 25 hours, 15 minutes and 22 seconds. This is necessary for the spreadsheet calculations.
