A Global View
CREW; Phil Grigg (navigator) William Harrison, Jono Trolove and Tony Turnbull
It was a race with a bit of everything. We had champagne sailing all the way to Stephens Island with flat sea and reasonably constant wind. At Stephens Island about 1830 we had a few ports to toast Jeremy passing 3 years before which got us ready to battle through the night.
From Stephens Island we tried to keep north as Phil kept us up to date with weather forecasts and tides. Most of the yachts around us headed south to seek land breeze while we tacked north to get the forecast NE breeze. Just before 3am we were going around in circles with no wind then the NE breeze filled in with 12 knots so up with our big blue kite, pole on the forestay, we were off doing 7 or 8 knots. This lasted for over an hour then at Separation Point we drifted for hours doing 1 to 5 knots until finally finishing at 0815.
Thanks to our awesome crew with excellent driving and tactics. The tactic decisions were made easier with Phil’s navigation and weather forecast input. I would also like to thank Dave and Jo for letting us take Global on the race. Also, thanks to everyone involved in the race organization for a well-organized race prize giving etc. and finally a big thank you to Fortuna Lights for doing the race start.
