Offering divisions for the more serious who fly their spinnakers to the more cruise orientated yachts who race the white sails division, we have a full and varied racing program.
Each season we have new owners who are learning and there is plenty of helpful and useful advice to be given if requested. We aim to get new owners out onto the water enjoying their boat.
There are also opportunities for people who are new to sailing to
a) join a racing crew. Email events@waikawaboatingclub.co.nz with a bio summary of your boating experience (or not) with your contact details. Your bio will be sent to our skippers who are looking for crew. Interested skippers will contact you.
b) come and join our Race Management Team. Here’s a brief description of the positions. Email events@waikawaboatingclub.co.nz with your interest.
Racing Program 2024-2025
- Change to Sounds Marine Short Harbour Race (now one division)
If you wish to race your yacht with Waikawa Boating Club for the first time you will need to fill out the two forms below at least 72 hours before you want to race and email or deliver them to the Club Office. If you simply turn up on the start line you can race but the Race Management Team is unable to take your finish time or calculate a result for you.
- Handicap Application Form. We need to know about your boat to give you a handicap.
- Skipper Intention to Race and Declaration Form. You indicate on this form which Races or Series you wish to enter and make a safety declaration.
Skippers are charged $16 for each race started. To save on the cost to enter the races, check out our Seasons Rass Pass here – Racing Season Pass 2024 – 2025

Boomtown Summer Fun Series SIs
Addendum to the Winter Sailing Instructions (dated 18th July 2024)
Depending on the wind, and at the discretion of the Race Officer, there will be one or two races on Sunday 21st july 2024. If there is one race, this will be called out on the radio Chnl 77 by the Race Officer, and will run as usual by the Winter Sailing Instructions.
There will be one start for each fleet (as normal and normal times) boats will race a circuit/lap. After lap one the yacht’s time will be taken. The yacht keeps racing (lap 2) and their time will be taken again after lap 2.
Race 1 results will be based on lap one finish times. Race 2 results will be based on the total time taken to race lap 1 and lap 2.
Note: Waikawa Boating Club uses Sailwave for the results and the times will be as per Sailwave to the nearest second and not decimal parts of a second. All times in seconds, and any decimals are rounded to the nearest whole figure with a decimal of 0.5 and above rounded up, and less than 0.5 rounded down
